Inside the NUST-I Hub

…Where Innovation Comes to Life

Innovation is not something abstract or reserved for experts. Innovation is practical, visible and forms part of everyday activities. At the NUST Innovation (NUST-I) Hub, an ordinary day might look something like a student turning a classroom idea into a prototype, a team working on a solution from a recent hackathon challenge brought by an industry partner, a researcher fabricating a custom tool, or even an entrepreneur refining a product before taking it to market.

Closing the Gap Between Ideas and Impact

“At its core, the NUST-I Hub exists to bridge the gap between ideas and impact. It is built on the understanding that Namibia has no shortage of innovative thinking, but needs more opportunities, resources and support to transform those ideas into practical products, services and solutions that make a meaningful difference,” explained the Director of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Valerie Garises. She further elaborated that instead of allowing promising concepts to remain confined to classrooms, research projects or early-stage discussions, the Hub provides an environment where innovation is developed, tested and refined into outcomes that can benefit industries, communities and the nation.

Solving Problems That Matter

“Innovation is not built around theory, but by way of real challenges through hackathons, industry and government partnerships, community-driven problem statements at the NUST‑I Hub,” advised Innovation Process Developer, Dr Paulus Shigwedha. This ensures that what is built is relevant, needed and ready to be used; all within one connected entrepreneurship ecosystem. The result is a system where innovation is about solving real problems that matter to people.

Simultaneously, industries, communities and public institutions continue to grapple with real-world challenges that require practical, locally relevant solutions. The NUST-I Hub serves as the bridge between these needs and the innovative potential within the University. “By bringing together innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship learning, hands-on problem-solving initiatives, rapid prototyping, business development, technology transfer and commercialisation, the Hub creates a seamless pathway for ideas to evolve into solutions that address societal challenges while creating lasting economic and social value,” said Dr Shigwedha.

Prototyping

One Ecosystem With Endless Possibilities

The NUST‑I Hub offers a connected set of services designed to take someone from a single idea to a real solution in the world. Its greatest value is found in the connection between these services, creating a seamless journey that turns curiosity into practical skills and innovative ideas into real-world impact. “Here, you will find more than just access to our facilities. It provides a connected innovation ecosystem that supports every stage of the journey, from a single idea to a real-world solution,” added Garises.

Building an Entrepreneurial University

By integrating innovation and entrepreneurship education, hands-on problem-solving, prototyping, business development and technology commercialisation, the Hub equips students, researchers and entrepreneurs with the tools to create meaningful impact. Students develop practical skills through innovation programmes, hackathons and prototyping opportunities that transform ideas into viable products and ventures. Researchers are supported to move beyond publications by protecting, developing and commercialising their innovations in collaboration with industry and communities. Entrepreneurs, in turn, benefit from structured support that spans idea validation, incubation, product development, intellectual property protection, market access and business growth—enabling them to build sustainable enterprises that contribute to Namibia's economic and social development.

The journey of the NUST‑I Hub has been shaped by a clear transformation. From a traditional university incubator acting as a support unit, to a foundation for an entrepreneurial university. An incubator supports businesses, but an entrepreneurial university builds a culture where everyone can innovate. The NUST‑I Hub is now moving beyond supporting startups to enabling students to become job creators, research to become solutions and partnerships to become co-creation platforms.
