Rangeland Science students explore Farm Middelplaats

A class of 30 first-year Rangeland Science students of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences, had an insightful experience last month at Farm Middelplaats, 30km to the south-west of Otjiwarongo.

The group examined the rangeland restoration efforts of pervious students. They then set up a fertilisation trial, in which four different fertilisers were applied independently, and then together, on both bushed and debushed rangeland.

The fertilisers were selected for their likelihood of favouring the subsequent growth of grass over that of bushes.

When the students were asked what they learnt on the excursion, Lydia Shivia said: “I learnt how to make bone char to add Calcium and Phosphorous to the soil.” Helta Sheya emphasised that she learnt how to use a dumpy level to mark the contour, whilst Franstina Daniel says she gained experience with sowing grass seeds along contours.
