NUST Strengthens Strategic Partnerships with China to Advance Agricultural Innovation and Research
NUST has strengthened its international footprint following its participation in Namibia’s high-level State Visit to the People’s Republic of China, opening new opportunities for strategic partnerships in higher education, research, innovation, agriculture and technology.
Led by Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Andrew Niikondo, the NUST deputation joined the national delegation accompanying President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during the official visit to China. The mission formed part of Namibia’s broader strategy to deepen bilateral relations with China while promoting trade, investment, education and skills development. The delegation visited Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Beijing, where it engaged government institutions, universities, research organisations, technology companies and potential investors.
A key priority for NUST was the promotion of the proposed Otavi Agricultural Campus, an initiative designed to strengthen Namibia’s agricultural sector through research, innovation and agro-processing. Unlike traditional agricultural institutions that focus primarily on farming practices, the Otavi campus aims to bridge agriculture and industry by promoting value addition, food processing, mechanisation and entrepreneurship. The initiative aligns with Namibia’s Vision 2030 and national aspirations to industrialise agricultural production, improve food security and create sustainable employment opportunities.
During the visit to Chengdu, the delegation toured one of the world’s largest mushroom production facilities, where advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, are used throughout the production process. The visit provided valuable insights into how innovation and technology can transform agricultural production. The delegation believes similar models, adapted to Namibia’s local conditions and indigenous agricultural products, could significantly contribute to the development of the proposed Otavi Agricultural Campus.
Meanwhile, the Shenzhen programme exposed the delegation to China’s rapidly evolving innovation ecosystem through engagements with technology enterprises, digital trade platforms and business development organisations. Discussions focused on opportunities for collaboration in artificial intelligence, smart cities, renewable energy, digital transformation, logistics, technology commercialisation and entrepreneurship. These engagements highlighted the potential for NUST to strengthen applied research, establish innovation partnerships and enhance industry collaboration in support of Namibia’s digital economy ambitions.
In Beijing, Prof. Niikondo presented NUST’s vision for the Otavi Agricultural Campus during the Namibia–China Cooperation Seminar on Education, Creative Industries and Artificial Intelligence. He invited Chinese universities, investors and industry partners to collaborate with NUST in developing the campus and advancing agricultural research, innovation and food security. The proposal received considerable interest, with several institutions and businesses expressing their willingness to explore future partnerships.
According to the delegation, the mission has positioned NUST to expand international partnerships, attract investment and strengthen its contribution to Namibia’s knowledge economy. The University will now focus on formalising the relationships established during the visit, pursuing collaborative research projects, expanding staff and student mobility, and implementing a structured China Partnership Strategy to support its long-term internationalisation agenda.
