VSAT Tech for Kunene Communities
Despite technological advances the world over, many remote villages largely live disconnected from the digital world, cut off from the conveniences and opportunities that internet access brings. But for a few communities in the Kunene Region, that changed recently, thanks to a team from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI).
The FCI’s Department of Computer Science has provided VSAT internet connectivity and Wi-Fi access to two remote communities in the Kunene Region (Orupembe and Otjiu West) through the auspices of the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia. VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal, and it is a two-way satellite ground station with a small dish antenna used to access the internet, especially in remote or underserved areas.
Edward Nepolo, the Head of the DCS and project lead, highlighted that this intervention not only enhances access to information and public services but also enables the communities to participate in the national digital economy. “They can now market their conservancies online, manage tourism bookings, and promote their cultural and natural heritage - directly contributing to local economic growth,” he said. Schoolchildren in these areas also stand to benefit by gaining access to educational resources.
Despite facing difficult terrain and logistical setbacks, including damaged equipment and limited fuel in remote areas, the dedicated NUST team overcame all obstacles to complete the installations. The work aligns strongly with Namibia’s National Digital Strategy by promoting inclusive digital transformation. “By providing internet connectivity to underserved areas, it narrows down the digital divide, enhances access to information and public services, and enables remote communities to actively participate in the national digital economy,” Dr Gereon Kapuire, an FCI Senior Lecturer and project coordinator explained.
Building on the success in Kunene, DCS plans to extend installations to at least five more conservancies across Namibia, reaffirming NUST’s commitment to technological equity and community upliftment.
