Services Offered

Student Support

Student Support activities provide appropriate and needed support to students in all academic disciplines of the institution. They are designed and offered by the Office of the Dean of Students and the Centre for Teaching and Learning. Student support consists of:

  • New Student Orientation;
  • Student Development Workshops;
  • Student Leadership Workshops;
  • Life Skills and Counseling; and
  • Academic Skills amongst others.

Other tutorials are extended to Mathematics and Science, and other fields that are identified and requested by students and faculty.

Faculty Support

All activities under faculty support are designed to transform teaching at this higher education institution to become learning centered so that they employ appropriate methods in learning, teaching and assessment to develop the necessary and required skills that students ought to obtain.  Old teaching, learning and assessment methods are redundant, do not fit learning for a new generation and can no longer be the reference point.  Faculty support includes regular and annual workshops, specialized training, regular academic discussions, and E-learning training and support.

E-Learning

The main charge of e-Learning activities is to encourage the development of new teaching opportunities with technology. The increased use of E-learning components across the curriculum promotes student familiarity with technology and helps manage course delivery in different ways. These E-learning components are part of classroom-based classes, hybrid classes, or fully on-line courses. Training academic staff in practices related to E-learning instruction and assessment is necessary to facilitate the effective use of technology. Increased student demand for computer lab access will have to be thoroughly assessed and be commensurate with the expansion of e-learning into new areas.

Writing Centre

The establishment of a Reading and Writing Support Unit is associated with the envisaged Academic Support Centre and provides supplemental English instruction to promote student success across the curriculum. This Writing Centre offers targeted writing workshops, and train and use tutors to offer individualized consultations with students to improve writing across the curriculum.

(i) Mission Statement

The writing centre aims to help all members of the Namibia University of Science and Technology community improve their writing. The centre provides a supportive and motivating environment where members of the Namibia University of Science and Technology community can discuss their work with a trained consultant and receive help at any stage in the writing process. Through one-to-one consultations, clients are able to share their work with a trustworthy professional, receive advice and guidance on improving their work and develop their skills as writers for academic purposes.
The writing center also aids instructors who want to incorporate writing into their courses. By providing support services for students, the centre eases the burden on instructors who assign writing in their courses. Instructors are able to refer struggling students to the writing centre for assistance or request workshops to address specific issues. Instructors may also consult the writing centre on how to develop writing assignments for their classes.
