First cohort for Scriptwriting for Children’s Television course

Scriptwriting Course for Children’s TV Launched

NUST officially launched Phase 1 of its Department of Digital Arts and Animation (DAA) with a noteworthy first: a three-week Scriptwriting for Children’s Television course — the first of its kind in Namibia.

Offered in hybrid mode, the course gives students a solid introduction to professional screenwriting, with a specific focus on storytelling for young audiences. “This course was introduced in response to the growing demand for skilled professionals in Namibia’s creative sector,” said Jordaania Andima, Head of DAA. “It is about equipping students with the tools to create engaging content for film, TV, and online platforms.”

The course is led by respected industry voices, Obed Emvula, producer of the acclaimed local film Katutura, and Patrick Sam, the Managing Director of Creative Culture Investments. Emvula highlighted the role of storytelling in driving positive change. “When creative skills are developed, they do not just serve the arts, they empower individuals and communities,” he said. Sam added that the creative industry has real potential for national development, particularly for marginalised and vulnerable communities.

Upon completion, students will earn a Certificate of Competency in Scriptwriting, which may open doors to further study in film, media, or creative writing; both at NUST and at other institutions, locally or abroad.

As a final project, top-performing students will have their scripts animated by peers in the animation stream. Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the Department is scheduled for 2027, when two full degree programmes will be launched, with more to follow in 2028. All programmes will be designed to promote entrepreneurship and help students develop self-sustaining creative careers.

The global demand for children's content, especially with the rise of streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+, means there are increasing career opportunities in the children’s TV industry. A specialised course provides the skills and credentials necessary for a career in this field, helping writers enter a competitive market with expertise.
