From Grief to Graduation: Ashley Witbooi’s Journey of Resilience
“I am someone who is still becoming.”
That is how Ashley Witbooi introduces herself. It is not a statement of uncertainty, but one of honesty, self-awareness, and growth. As she prepares to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from NUST, and to step on stage as a Miss Namibia finalist, her journey is not just about a qualification, but about who she had to become to earn it.
At 27, Ashley is stepping into this moment with a quiet sense of pride in the face of a journey that asked everything of her. During her studies, she lost both her mother and her grandmother, a period that reshaped her completely. “Losing my mom and my grandmother changed me in ways I did not expect,” she said. “I would sit in front of my closet and cry… I would sit on the shower floor, crying out for my mom,” she added.
Three years earlier, she had made a promise to herself: to complete her degree within the time the University had set. It was a goal she held onto, even when everything around her felt uncertain. “There were moments where I genuinely did not think I would make it, but I achieved my goal, regardless of what I was going through.”
The Spirit of Resilience
Balancing work and her studies while navigating grief required a level of discipline she had to build in real time. “My work taught me discipline and consistency, while my studies kept me focused on the bigger picture. It was not always perfectly balanced, but it taught me how to continuously show up,” she said.
Even academic setbacks, including failing modules, became part of that learning. “That experience taught me that resilience is not about always being strong. Sometimes it is about continuing even when you feel weak, asking for help when you need it, and never giving up on yourself.”

Alignment
Ashley sees her Miss Namibia journey not as separate from her academic and professional path, but as a natural extension of it. “It feels like alignment,” she said with a smile. Looking ahead, she hopes to build a career that connects her passions in a meaningful way. “Ultimately, I want to build a career that allows me to grow in my profession while still staying rooted in purpose.”
When asked what she would say to students who may be struggling, her answer is simple: “Give yourself grace, but do not give up on yourself. Your story is still unfolding, and where you are right now is not the end of it.”
