2019-2021 COHORTS

NATIONAL GRADUATE SURVEY

Dear NUST Graduates

The 2024 National Graduate Survey coordinated by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in collaboration with Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), University of Namibia (UNAM), International University of Management (IUM), Institute for Open Learning (IOL) and Namibia College Of Open Learning (NAMCOL) is a crucial initiative aimed at assessing the employment and economic status of graduates from these institutions. By gathering data on NUST, UNAM, IUM, IOL and NAMCOL graduates from the years 2019, 2020 and 2021, the survey aims to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of higher education in Namibia.

The confidentiality of the data collected is of utmost importance, ensuring that participants' privacy is protected. The results will be utilized solely for the purposes of the study and will not compromise individual privacy or identification. This commitment to confidentiality aims to encourage honest and open responses from participants.

Participation in the survey is vital as it will provide valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, academics, and administrators in the higher education sector. By understanding the employment and economic outcomes of graduates, stakeholders can identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to enhance the overall performance of the higher education sector, ultimately contributing to socio-economic development in Namibia.

I thank you

Dr Erold Naomab
Vice-Chancellor

WHAT ARE TRACER STUDIES?

‘Graduate Surveys’ or ‘Tracer Studies’ describe a standard survey (in written form) of graduates from higher education institutions, which take place after graduation. They are a means of tracking graduates to find out what they are doing with the education and training they received. Common topics covered in tracer studies include questions on study progress, the transition to work, work entrance, job and career, use of learned competencies and current occupation.

A QUALITY ASSURANCE TOOL

One of the requirements for quality management in higher education is the consideration of different perspectives when trying to assure quality of teaching and learning. In this context, a graduate survey represent an inclusive tool for incorporating the 'points of view' of graduates.

WHY ARE TRACER STUDIES IMPORTANT?

Tracer studies are important for the following reasons:

  • To find out what happened to graduates after they completed their studies;
  • To find out if they are employed, self-employed or whether they are still looking for jobs;
  • To find out if their studies prepare them well for the workplace;
  • To find out if graduates use the knowledge and skills they have learned during their studies; and
  • To use graduates’ feedback to improve the quality of the study programmes and more specific, to revise the curricular, if necessary.

The tracer studies conducted by the higher education institutions (NUST, IUM, UNAM and IOL) form part of a national collaborative project, NAMTRACE (Namibia Tracer Studies), coordinated by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

HOW WILL THE FINDINGS OF THIS STUDY BE USED?

The findings are used in different areas of higher education development, as well as to improve services provided by the higher education institutions.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE?

All graduates who completed their studies in year 2019, 2020 and 2021 from NUST
