First International Staff Partners Week takes-off
Thirteen universities from seven countries gathered on campus recently to take part in NUST’s inaugural International Partner Staff Week (IPSW). The event, organised by the Department of Corporate Engagement and Internationalisation, with the aim to enhance global collaboration, cultural exchange, and professional development.
In his opening address, Vice-Chancellor Prof Erold Naomab expressed pride in the university’s growing international footprint. “As we stand at the intersection of rapid globalisation and digital transformation, it is clear that our institutions must be beacons of diversity and inclusion.” With a student body that includes 958 international students from 35 countries, NUST serves as a microcosm of the global community, he further noted.
Her Excellency, Ms Anna Beatriz Martins the European Union Ambassador to Namibia, delivered the Keynote Address speaking highly of NUST’s longstanding partnership with the EU.
Throughout the week, participants explored the importance of cultural competence as a key skill in academia and beyond. This concept goes beyond respecting cultural differences to creating environments where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive. NUST’s diverse staff - comprising 129 non-Namibian staff members from 22 countries - reflects this inclusive ethos.
Ultimately, this IPSW is a strategic initiative designed to enhance the University’s global engagement and advance knowledge on an international scale. The benefits of internationalisation are many, such as boosting university rankings, as engaging with global issues fosters innovation and critical thinking among students and staff. These rankings lead to collaborative research and exchange programmes which is key to truly make an impact in society.
The event was held under the theme “Cultural Competence for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education”.
