Department of Facilities

Department of Facilities  /

The Facilities Department is responsible for creating, managing and maintaining the physical environment that enables NUST to deliver its core mandate of teaching, learning, research, innovation and community engagement. Through the effective management of the University's buildings, infrastructure, grounds and essential support services, the Department works to ensure that NUST campuses are safe, secure, functional, accessible and fit for purpose for students, staff and visitors.

The Department brings together Safety, Health & Environmental; Control Room & Electronic Systems; and Maintenance & Infrastructure Planning. Through these functions, Facilities oversees areas including occupational health and safety, campus security, access control and CCTV, building and infrastructure maintenance, electrical and plumbing services, HVAC, cleaning and grounds management, fleet and transport services, space and building management, parking, infrastructure planning, refurbishments and capital improvement initiatives.

Beyond the day-to-day operation of the University, Facilities has an important role in planning for the future of NUST's physical environment. This includes protecting and extending the useful life of University assets, improving the reliability and resilience of critical infrastructure, responding to changing space and operational requirements, and ensuring that infrastructure investment supports the University's long-term strategic priorities.

Ultimately, the work of Facilities is about creating an environment in which the NUST community can perform at its best. By providing safe, reliable and well-managed facilities and continuously improving the University's physical environment, the Department helps minimise operational disruptions, safeguard people and assets, and provide a campus experience that supports the University's ambition and continued growth.

MAINTENANCE & INFRASTRUCTURE PLANNING

To plan, coordinate, manage and monitor the maintenance, infrastructure and facility support requirements of NUST to ensure that buildings, facilities, essential services and infrastructure remain safe, reliable, functional and fit for purpose. The function is responsible for planned, preventive and reactive maintenance; infrastructure planning, repairs, refurbishment and upgrades; and the coordination and monitoring of maintenance contractors and service providers. It oversees technical maintenance services, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and general building maintenance, while also coordinating cleaning contractors, facility support services, terrain and grounds maintenance, and lease and parking management.

Effective maintenance helps to prevent minor defects from developing into costly failures, extends the lifespan of University assets, reduces disruptions to teaching, learning, research and administrative activities, and ensures that critical building systems and services operate efficiently. Through proper planning and prioritisation, the function anticipates future infrastructure needs, manages resources responsibly, supports maintenance and capital investment decisions, and promotes the long-term sustainability and preservation of NUST's infrastructure.
