NUST HR at Correctional Facility

Cheers to a successful International HR Day!

NUST recently wrapped up a vibrant three-day celebration of International Human Resources Day, and what a celebration it was! Marking 10 years of progress, innovation, and strategic growth, this year’s theme, “Championing Ethical Technology and AI Integrations,” reminded us that the future of work is already here and it is rooted in ethics, inclusion, and smart technology.

Empowering People, Sharing Stories

Organised by the Human Capital Department and the FCHSE Human Resource Management section, the celebrations brought together students, staff, and stakeholders for an inspiring series of events. Highlights included a student-led workshop, and a powerful outreach visit to NUST students at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, which was an experience that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Ms Majory Mukasa, Manager: Talent Acquisition and Remuneration, shared: “The theme speaks directly to the changing nature of work, where ethics, AI, and inclusion must go hand in hand. At NUST, we are building a future-ready workforce grounded in our core values.” She added: “HR Day is a chance to connect beyond our usual roles. It strengthens our culture, builds collaboration, and reinforces trust across the university.”

For HR Student Society Vice President, Taimi Amulungu, the correctional facility visit was particularly moving: “It was a life lesson. Despite everything, many of those students still believe in their dreams. It reminded us that HR is not just about policies – it is about people, purpose, and resilience.”

Innovation in Action

As the workplace evolves, so does NUST’s approach to HR. The recent launch of an e-recruitment system has brought greater transparency and efficiency to the hiring process. Furthermore, the addition of a Wellness and Engagement Practitioner to the team shows the University’s ongoing commitment to a healthy, inclusive work culture.

Looking Ahead

Lecturer Fiina Shimaneni, from the Department of Governance and Management Sciences, spoke about the future of HR and education saying “Tomorrow’s workplaces are inclusive, tech-driven, and always evolving. To prepare our students for that, we need to keep bridging the gap between academia and real-world HR.”

The celebrations wrapped up with a lively Staff Day, where informal conversations with NUST Executive Management brought a great sense of unity and openness.
