Unforgettable Moments: A Graduation to Remember!
NUST capped off its 10-year anniversary with a historic milestone — the conferral of a record 17 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in 2025, the highest number in the University’s history. It was a fitting celebration of a decade defined by excellence, innovation, and impact.
Adding national significance to the occasion, Her Excellency Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, delivered a message through Right Honourable Dr Elijah Ngurare, emphasising the importance of aligning innovation with national priorities.
“By aligning education with national priorities, forging partnerships between Government, academia, and industry, and ensuring that no Namibian is left behind, we can build a nation that is inclusive, innovative, and resilient,” she said.
Dr Ngurare also highlighted the Government’s N$257 million National Youth Fund, a strategic initiative aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs, promoting innovation, and advancing Namibia’s transformation in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Breaking Records
Across both graduation ceremonies held this year, NUST conferred a total of 3 703 qualifications — the largest number since its establishment. The May 2025 Graduation Ceremony saw 2 804 graduates walk across the stage, followed by 899 at the October 2025 Ceremony, collectively showcasing the University’s decade-long legacy of growth and academic excellence.
In his welcoming remarks, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Andrew Niikondo, reflected on this achievement:
“This year, NUST has conferred the largest number of qualifications in its history. Together with the May ceremonies, this brings the total number of graduates in 2025 to 3 703 — the highest in the University’s history.” This year’s cohort also reflected a positive gender balance, with 51% female and 49% male graduates — a testament to NUST’s commitment to inclusive academic excellence.
Honouring Courage and Perseverance
A highlight of the ceremony was a deeply moving moment of recognition when Leila Muxinga received a Certificate of Courage and Determination for her remarkable perseverance in the face of personal adversity. Her story resonated across the audience, embodying the resilience and strength that define the NUST spirit.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the NUST Interim Council, Norah Ndopu reminded graduates that the value of education extends far beyond the classroom: “Each of you leaves NUST today with more than one qualification. You leave with a responsibility — to use your knowledge and skills to address Namibia’s pressing challenges. Ask yourself two questions as you move forward: What will I do? And who will I be?”
Recognising Excellence in Tourism and Entrepreneurship
The 2025 October Graduation Ceremony also featured the conferral of NUST’s fourth Honorary Doctorate, awarded to Dr Bernhardt Zaaruka, a distinguished entrepreneur and philanthropist. Dr Zaaruka is celebrated for his transformative impact on Namibia’s business landscape and his far-reaching contributions to national development achievements recognised through the conferment of a Doctor of Philosophy in Entrepreneurship (Honoris Causa).
