Despite his disability, he is determined to help others
Imagine you are a mechanic and you get called to a job. Then, on your way back from the job, you are involved in a car accident, alone in the middle of the Skeleton Coast, a remote 500 km stretch of Atlantic coastline in northern Namibia. You are unable to move, unable to scream for help – and in any case, who would hear you? Then, out of nowhere, some good Samaritans touring the area find you and come to your rescue. The accident leaves you physically challenged and wheelchair-bound.
This is the story of Bernard Sitali, who was honoured with the Award of Courage at the just-ended Graduation Ceremony at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), a recognition celebrating extraordinary resilience, perseverance, and the strength to rise above life-altering adversity.
Before the accident, he worked as a mechanic and was passionate about technical skills and hands-on work. Determined not to allow his circumstances to define him, he chose to continue contributing to the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, this time as a trainer and mentor dedicated to shaping and inspiring others through education. His mobility might be limited, but his mentality was not.
In 2021, he embarked on his academic journey, facing physical challenges and emotional battles. Yet, through every obstacle, he remained resilient. Last week, that journey came full circle as he graduated with a Diploma in Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
Congratulations, Bernhard, on your qualification and for being courageous.
