Deepening Regional Ties in Tech and Energy Innovation
A high-level delegation from NUST, recently visited Cape Town, South Africa, to deepen collaborations in technology, energy innovation, and applied research. The delegation included Prof Peter Katjavivi, the Chancellor, Prof Erold Naomab, the Vice-Chancellor and senior academics, who engaged with key institutions such as the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Stellenbosch University.
Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)
At CPUT, the team toured the AgriFood Technology Station, an initiative supported by South Africa’s Technology Innovation Agency. Inspired by this model, NUST plans to establish its first technology station at Otjiwarongo, focused on value addition, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) support, and market-readiness training. “Technology stations are critical enablers of applied research and innovation. By collaborating with institutions like CPUT, we can boost SME competitiveness and enhance graduate employability,” Prof Naomab said.
CPUT Survival Centre
The visit to the University’s Survival Centre highlighted the need for advanced maritime survival training in Namibia. Discussions explored establishing a Centre of Excellence in Walvis Bay to support NUST’s Marine Engineering programme and expand TVET-based marine training. Strengthening Namibia’s marine sector is key for sustainable job creation and unlocking ocean-based economic opportunities.
Stellenbosch University
Furthermore, the discussions at Stellenbosch University, were focused on entering into a Memorandum of Understanding through applied energy research. Plans were tabled for a Centre for Oil and Gas at NUST, covering a national energy readiness assessment, Namibia-South Africa gas corridor feasibility, and policy advisory work. This aligns with Namibia’s vision of a diversified energy mix including renewables, natural gas, and green hydrogen.
Prof Naomab emphasises that such partnerships reaffirm NUST’s commitment to driving research, training, and innovation that directly support Namibia’s development goals.
