Description
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Natural Resource Management and Ecology is a postgraduate specialisation degree that aims to provide advanced education and training for individuals aspiring to become leaders in ecological research, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management. This interdisciplinary programme equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and research expertise required to address complex ecological challenges, promote biodiversity conservation, and optimise the use of natural resources. Students will acquire the skills needed to conceptualise, develop, and independently undertake applied research in the general field of resource ecology and its sub-disciplines where advanced knowledge is required. Graduates will be able to investigate and develop original and innovative ideas and solutions to problems related to the scientific investigation and management of natural environments, with particular emphasis on the equitable and sustainable utilisation of natural resources. The programme further enables students to develop, evaluate, and apply scientific theories, techniques, and models to solve complex societal problems related to the utilisation and protection of natural resources, and to play a significant role in the development and management of impactful research projects, both individually and as part of a team.
The development of research competence and critical thinking skills is a central priority of this PhD programme. The research output, presented in the form of a thesis that meets international academic standards of quality, rigour, and integrity, will contribute meaningfully and substantially to the existing body of knowledge in the relevant field or area of specialisation through the comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of existing knowledge.
Admission Requirements
A qualification from a recognised institution at NQF Level 9 in natural resource management and ecology-related fields or related cognate areas, or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline from a recognised institution.
Applicants must provide evidence of having conducted supervised research at Master’s degree level and will be required to submit a short concept proposal describing their proposed research topic for review by the Department. Applicants may also be required to attend a pre-selection interview, at the discretion of the Head of the Department, to assess their competencies for independent research in their chosen area of specialisation.
In cases where an applicant’s prior field of experience or academic record deviates from the required articulation path in natural resource management and ecology, factors such as research and industry experience, interview outcomes, and recommendations by faculty members may be considered to facilitate entry into the programme.
In addition to the applicant’s qualification, admission will be subject to the availability of appropriate research facilities and infrastructure, as well as a qualified supervisor with specialised knowledge related to the proposed research topic, in accordance with the Rules for Postgraduate Studies of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) Yearbook.
