A Career Change Does Not Mean Starting Over
Sometimes, changing careers does not mean leaving the past behind. Sometimes, it means carrying everything you have learned into a new chapter and discovering that those experiences still have a purpose.
For Ruben Angala, that journey began in July 2015 when he joined the Namibia Police Force as a Constable. A year later, he successfully completed his basic police training, an experience that strengthened the discipline, responsibility and commitment to service that would continue to shape his professional journey.
At the same time, Ruben was pursuing another ambition. “At NUST, I was studying Natural Resources Management, driven by an interest in conservation and the environment,” he said while admitting that balancing police duties with his academic ambitions was not always easy. Ruben remained committed to both, and in 2020, his determination paid off when he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources Management.
Later that year, he made an important career transition, leaving the police service to join the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism. “My new career in wildlife protection and environmental conservation may have seemed like a departure from law enforcement, but I saw a connection between the two,” Ruben explained. The discipline, vigilance and sense of duty developed during his years in the police service became valuable foundations for his work in conservation. Rather than starting from scratch, he was building on what he had already learned.
And he was not finished studying.
In 2023, Ruben returned to NUST to pursue a Master’s Degree in Natural Resources Management. This time, he had to balance advanced academic work and research with the demands of his professional responsibilities. “My journey required patience, discipline and persistence, but I continued until I reached the finish line,” he added. He finally walked across the graduation stage once again this October.
His story is a reminder that career changes do not erase what came before. Sometimes, they reveal how every chapter, even an unexpected one, can prepare you for the next. For Ruben, the journey from policing to conservation was not a complete change of direction. It was a continuation of his commitment to service, expressed in a different way.
