NUST Strengthens Dialogue on Industry–Academia Collaboration in Russia
The Russian-African Raw Materials Dialogue recently took place in Russia. The engagement is a strategic international forum promoting cooperation between Russia and African nations in mineral resources, mining management and engineering education.
Held at Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University, in partnership with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNESCO’s International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education, the forum brings together government officials, diplomats, industry leaders and academic representatives from more than 40 countries.
A special academic session for Russian and African rectors focused on “Harmonising Academic Cooperation between Russia and Africa and Developing a Unified Approach to Engineering Training.”

The NUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof Frednard Gideon, attended the event together with senior delegates from the University. During the discussions, Prof Gideon was singled him out as a pioneer in bridging the gap between industry and academia, highlighting his passion for establishing learning factories and industrial parks. This vision has been central to Prof Gideon’s leadership agenda since his first day as Vice-Chancellor at NUST, underscoring the importance of aligning academic training with industry needs and practical skills development.
The programme featured round-table discussions, presentations and a visit to the Scientific and Education Centre of Technological Sites in Sablino, which serves as part of the university’s industrial park. The visit offered valuable insight into how universities can strengthen the connection between education, research and industry.
