Forum Sparks Dialogue on Sustainable Urban Settlements

Through the Institute for Land, Livelihoods and Housing (ILLH), NUST successfully concluded its 2026 Urban Forum over two insightful days of dialogue, learning and collaboration under the theme, “Capacity Development for Sustainable Urban Settlements.”

The event responded to Namibia's rapid urbanisation and the increasing demand for skilled professionals, stronger institutions and innovative solutions to address challenges associated with urban growth, service delivery and informal settlement upgrading. Director of ILLH, Prof Uchendu Eugene Chigbu remarked that the Urban Forum is an annual public platform that brings together stakeholders to engage in open dialogue on pressing urban development issues in Namibia and beyond. “This year’s theme directly addresses the gap in human and institutional capacity that impedes inclusive urban development and upgrading,” he added.

A key focus of the forum was building the next generation of urban development professionals. During a presentation on youth readiness for sustainable urban settlements, Country Director from the Youth Initiative for Land in Africa (YILAA Namibia), Cathrine Marenga encouraged young professionals to actively contribute to shaping Namibia's urban future and challenged participants to use their age to their advantage. Discussions emphasised mentorship, networking, continuous learning and practical experience as critical elements of professional development.

The forum also explored the role of technology and innovation, including the application of artificial intelligence in planning and land administration. Participants concluded by calling for stronger collaboration between academia, government, industry and communities, improved data systems, and increased investment in mentorship and capacity development. Through initiatives such as the Urban Forum, NUST continues to provide a platform for knowledge exchange and collaborative solutions that support inclusive and sustainable urban development in Namibia.
