The NUST Department of Hospitality and Tourism, in the Faculty of Management Sciences, conducted a Diamond Class Customer Service course for the residents of Oranjemund from 16 to 19 September 2017. The Department was tasked to develop a training programme for the residents in preparation for the town opening up to the public on 14 October 2017. Visitors to the town have always been required to undergo strict security checks because of diamond mining activities, but in a few weeks this will no longer be required. Furthermore, the 100 kilometre stretch of road between Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah will soon be tarred, making it easier for tourists to travel in the area. The NUST facilitators encouraged participants to take pride in their town and to exhibit excellent customer service that will encourage investors and tourists to visit the ‘diamond town,’ for the benefit of all. The training was well received and described as a success by the participants. The course was a follow-up to a Skills Needs Assessment Workshop carried out previously at the invitation of Namdeb and the Town Council.
