Professor Edosa Omoregie

Name: Professor Edosa Omoregie

Department: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Biography:

Prof. Omoregie'sProfessor Edosa Omoregie's academic career began in 1990 at the University of Jos, Nigeria. In 1995, he obtained his PhD in Zoology (Fisheries) from the same University. He rose through the ranks at the University of Jos, eventually becoming a full Professor of Fisheries in 2004. In 2008, he joined the University of Namibia as a Professor of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences and was later appointed the Director of the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre. In 2018, he joined the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, where he currently lectures and leads the research team on Marine Biology. Through the years, he has contributed over 150 scholarly works, including more than 70 peer-reviewed research papers. With an h-index of 25, i10-index of 37, and over 1,300 citations, he is among Namibia's top 10 rated scientists and the No. 1 Namibia scientist in Agriculture and Fisheries, based on AD Scientific Index, 2023 University rankings.

His extensive research contributions have significantly advanced our understanding of aquatic ecosystems, environmental impacts, and biodiversity. His research focuses on aquatic ecosystem management, assessing the impacts of ocean acidification and aquatic toxicants. His earlier work delved into the effects of water-soluble fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons and inorganic fertilisers on fish physiology. Upon relocating to Namibia, in collaboration with other researchers from the University of Namibia and funding from NCRST, Namport and NRF, he pioneered research projects assessing the impacts of ocean acidification and global warming on Namibia's coastal ecosystems. These research activities addressed critical environmental issues, shedding light on local implications for marine biodiversity and providing essential insights into the vulnerabilities of these ecosystems. His research recently has extended to assessing the ecosystem health status and biodiversity of Windhoek’s ephemeral rivers.

In collaboration with other researchers, these studies provided valuable insight into the ecosystem health status of these rivers. Beyond his primary research, Prof. Omoregie served as the Editor-in-Chief of the acclaimed Journal of Aquatic Sciences (from 2001 to 2006). Additionally, he has generously contributed his expertise as a reviewer for several aquatic science journals, aiding in the peer review and publication of high-quality research. He has earned recognition as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, a prestigious honour acknowledging his significant contributions to the field of science. From 2003 to 2008, he served with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations as an Expert Lecturer in Fisheries, developing Fisheries curricula for several African universities. Prof Omoregie's research contributions have expanded our knowledge of marine and aquatic ecosystems, addressed critical environmental challenges, and informed sustainable resource management practices. His dedication to teaching and mentoring future scientists further solidifies his role as a respected and influential figure in the academic and research community.
