Aletta McNally, Student Counsellor and HIV/AIDS Coordinator in the Department of Student Services, facilitated the workshop which was addressed by management and leadership consultants from the Namibian business sector. McNally said the Department had organised the workshop because it realised the dilemmas faced by student leaders at universities.
“The role of the student leader has become increasingly complex in the last decade. The increasing focus on accountability and changing demographics within the Namibian community has made the function of leading students at a tertiary institution much more challenging,” McNally said. She said the workshop was received very well by the participants who also made several recommendations for improvements.
Oscar Mwandingi, SRC President, commended the effort to empower student leaders with effective and essential leadership skills. “The workshop succeeded in providing opportunities for students to gain leadership experiences and enabled us to maximise our participation in decision-making and also enhanced our communication skills. When we return in 2016, we will definitely put the skills we have learnt to good use in dealing with challenges ahead,” he said.
